The ongoing construction of China's harmonious cities has seen progress since the 16th Party Congress of the Communist Party of China first convened.
Urban social security system has been completed.
In 2006, 129 million people in urban areas received a basic pension; 141 million people received basic medical insurance; and 104 million people received unemployment insurance. They accounted for 16.9%, 18.4% and 13.6% of total employees, according to sources from the National Bureau of Statistics.
Urban social and public service functions have been improved.
In 2006, there were 20,902 hospitals in urban areas. This has greatly alleviated the difficulty for urban and town citizens to seen by a doctor. There were 8,232 welfare centers for senior citizens and those without children in urban areas – 8.9% more than that in 2002.
The other features within harmonious cities include the healthy development of education, culture, sports and recreation; as well as improved social order and security, so that a sense of safety within urban areas has been restored.
