On October 10th, the National Bureau of Statistics released the "Report on the review of economic and social development between the 16th and 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China IV: urban and rural residents' living standards markedly improved." The report noted that since the 16th CPC National Congress, the incomes of urban and rural residents have increased rapidly. The level of consumption has significantly increased; and quality of life has improved.
In 2006, per capita disposable income of urban residents reached 11,759 yuan, an increase of 52.7% over 2002; and per capita net income of rural residents reached 3,587 yuan, up 44.9% over 2002. Despite the rapid growth in income, urban consumer spending remained stable. In 2006, per capita annual consumption expenditure reached 8,697 yuan, an increase of 44.2% over 2002; and per capita rural living expenses reached 2,829 yuan, an increase of 54.2%.
